Alfaz del Pi

The Sierra Helada or Frozen Mountain Natural Park is a protected natural area that’s part of the Region of Valencia’s network of natural parks.  

The name ‘Sierra Helada’ is derived from the fact that it looks like an imposing block of ice when the moonlight shines on its 300 metre cliffs. It’s a unique space to enjoy nature and walks in the open air. 

Enjoy spectacular views of the Mediterranean and the striking cliffs from the park’s different paths and trails. Stunning landscape and incredible scenery is, without a doubt, this natural park’s main attraction.

One of the most popular routes – and one we really recommend – is the walk up to the Albir Lighthouse, a 17th century watchtower that was used to defend the town against attacks by Berber pirates.

A charming destination where you can enjoy contact with nature in its purest form. 

There is no more delicious way to get to know a place than through its food. Marked by tradition, Alfaz del Pi’s cuisine features dishes made with native flavours and the best raw ingredients in the area. 

Delicious fresh fish from the bay stars in many of the local recipes, either as the main event or as a base for all kinds of rice dishes. Other regional dishes include pilotes amb dacsa (meat and corn balls), or cocas (a traditional Catalan pizza), both sweet and salty.

The delicious Alfaz del Pi food is best paired with one of the excellent local wines. Mendoza wine, a Denomination of Origin product, is grown, made and bottled in this municipality. 

Two and a half miles of sandy beaches await you in Alfaz del Pi, so sun-worshippers and water sports lovers will find plenty to keep them happy.

The most noteworthy is El Albir or Raco de l’Albir, a pebble stone beach that was awarded Blue Flag status years ago thanks to its crystal clear waters. Its easy access and proximity to the city make it the perfect setting for practising sports and water activities. In addition, this beach hosts a number of interesting events in the summer months, such as the Outdoor Film Festival in July and the artisanal market in August. 

There are also several harder-to-reach but less crowded beaches in the area. Located in the protected Sierra Helada Natural Park and classified as SCIs (Sites of Community Importance), these virgin coves are definitely worth the effort. They are the Cala de la Mina, Cala del Amerador and Cala del Médico, and the easiest way to approach them is with a boat. 

Alfaz del Pi is also the perfect destination for amateur and professional sportspeople. The area’s fantastic climate allows outdoor training to take place at any time of year. In addition, the municipality boasts well-equipped facilities to practise a wide variety of sports.

Windsurfing, diving and trips to the Sierra are other ways to explore Alfaz del Pi’s scenery, landmarks and above all, its beauty. 

If you happen to visit Alfaz del Pi during festival season, you’re in luck. The Fiestas de la Creueta, the International Film Festival or the Fiestas de El Albir are must-see events in the warmer months.
